As long as the player uses a potion on characters when they get reduced to 1 HP by Tail Screw, the fight is easy. Black Mage has an easier out than any other job since it casts Thunder and hits Karlabos's weakness. Knight and Monk can press the fight button until the fight is over, cracking through Karlabos's tough shell to get at that sweet shrimp inside. Blue Mage can cast Vampire to heal up when they get hit, but will likely be casting Aero otherwise. White Mage has no trouble with healing, but suffers a slow fight where it bonks Karlabos with staves for the entire fight. Thieves suffer because their weapon options (in an unmodified game) in this fight are a single knife and a single dagger while other characters punch twice for 3 damage. While thieves will have to take a patient approach and likely burn a pile of potions to cook the shrimp and white mages slug it out slowly with staves, other classes will blow through this fight with minimal difficulty.

Summary

Karlabos is the second boss in the game, but it might be the first one where you start using jobs other than Freelancer, depending on your run type. Karlabos is able to paralyze party members and reduce them to 1 HP, so carrying a stack of potions into the fight is recommended.

Strategies
