Summary

Byblos is a hard wall for many parties that forces a level grind to overcome. A source of fire damage is extremely useful for blasting past this fight, but without magic the player will be forced to contend with protect and drain. If the player finds themselves struggling against Byblos, the 3x magic dragon encounter in the forest outside the library is a good fight for EXP, or you could grind on the 5 Cur Nakk fight by Karnak for money to use later while gaining EXP.

Strategies

Beastmaster

Beastmaster can instantly end this fight by releasing Page 32. Better luck next time, Byblos.

Fire

Black Mage, Blue Mage, Red Mage, Mystic Knight, Summoner, Time Mage, and Geomancer have repeatable access to fire for this fight, claiming an easy victory. Ninja can throw flame scrolls, which it will need to have collected from Liquid Flame (human) or Mindflushers (in the sunken graveyard of all places). Consider throwing the Flame scroll to end the fight if you only have one.

The slow way

If you are forced to slug it out with Byblos you want to minimize counterattacks by grinding to higher levels for more damage or changing your skill loadout. Monk should use !focus do double their damage for only a single counterattack, Knight should two-hand for increased damage.

Pain

Thief, White Mage, and Berserker are all in for a rough fight against Byblos. Berserker's axes will cut through some of Byblos's defense, but it may be better to leave the Berserker dead so it can be revived near the end of the fight to insulate it from Discord halving its level and reducing its damage. White Mage can cast spells on Byblos to lower its MP to prevent Protect or drain counters by forcing Byblos to spend all its MP, but this is a very slow strategy. Thief can steal a supply of 99 Hi Potions and will use all of them in this fight. If you are stuck with a dark triad of these three classes, be prepared to level up a lot to squeeze past this wall of a boss.
